You put it in the blue bin. Where did it go?

- Who decided you should rinse it?
- Where does your city's bin actually go?
- Why are we still making it?

FAQ
So should I stop recycling?
No. Paper, cardboard, glass and metal cans mostly do get recycled, so keep sorting those. Bottles and cans you return for CRV deposit do well too. The problem is plastic: most of it can't be sold to anyone who will make something new from it. The best move is buying less of it.
Where do these numbers come from?
The recycling rates are CalRecycle's own estimates for 2024, published in January 2026 under the state's packaging law, SB 54. The lawsuit details come from the California Attorney General. Every source is linked at the bottom of this page.
Is this political?
It's about trash. Whoever you vote for, you were told the blue bin works, and for most plastic it doesn't. We just want people to know and to push the people in charge to fix it.
What's different about my city?
Every city's hauler accepts different things and sells to different buyers. Look up your hauler's accepted-items list, then ask them where the plastic actually goes after it leaves the truck.
